How I Met Whiskey Hollow Rush

Sometimes life introduces you to the right people before you even realize how important they’re going to be.

In 2021, my album Twenty Eight was nominated for a Syracuse Music Award. I spent most of the night sitting quietly, taking it all in, right next to two guys I’d never met before: Dave and Sal from Whiskey Hollow Rush. We talked casually, shared a few laughs, and enjoyed the show.

What I didn’t know was that our albums were actually up against each other in the same category.
My Twenty Eight vs. their Torn Up From the Corn Up.

When my name was called and I took home the award, the first two hands I shook were theirs.

That night was special for two reasons:

I won my first SAMMY.

I unknowingly met the people who would later become some of my closest collaborators.

After the show, they handed me their business cards. We talked about music, songwriting, and maybe working together someday. No big promises, just mutual respect and a shared love for creating something real.

Today, that chance encounter has turned into an incredible partnership. We’ve since collaborated on multiple projects, including award-winning albums—one of which brought home another Syracuse Music Award… this time together, standing side by side, where the story first began.

Funny how life works.
You go into a show hoping to win a trophy… and you walk out with lifelong friends instead. This story ends with BOTH!

Spinning Wheels was really one of those records where I stopped worrying so much about what box everything was supposed to fit in and just let the songs be what they were.

There’s country all over this record, but there’s also Americana, roots rock, a little southern rock, and some stuff that just kind of lives in its own lane. That’s probably one of the things I like most about it. It feels like a bunch of different parts of me all showing up on the same record.

A huge part of that came from working with Whiskey Hollow Rush.

By that point, we had really started finding our sound together, and instead of just playing the songs, we were shaping them as a band. Everybody brought something different to the table, and a lot of what you hear on Spinning Wheels came from letting those ideas breathe and seeing where they went.

The songs themselves are about life doing what life does.

Love, mistakes, relationships, chasing things, losing things, looking back, moving forward, and sometimes feeling like you’re doing a whole lot of moving without really knowing where you’re going.

That’s kind of where the title came from too.

Sometimes it feels like your wheels are turning and you’re making progress. Other times it feels like you’re just spinning them.

Musically, I wanted this record to have some grit. Big guitars, grooves, strong hooks, and plenty of room for the band to actually play. But I also wanted the lyrics to still matter.

Looking back, Spinning Wheels feels like an important record for me because it was another step toward trusting my own sound.

Not trying to chase what everybody else was doing.

Just making the music that felt like us.
